Sweet-smelling gardenias.
Verdant ferns and towering palms.
Coffee and cocoa trees.
Citrus trees, heavy with ripening fruit.
Bright red poinsettias hanging from lamp posts.
Festive green garlands twisted around doorways.
Giant animal topiaries made from soft green moss.
A Christmas tree as tall as your house, adorned with colorful balls and twinkly white lights, its base encircled by an old-fashioned electric train running in and out of the boughs.
Scale models of iconic Washington, DC, monuments and buildings.
Wait. What?
Such was the scene at the US Botanic Gardens shortly before Christmas, when my mom and I went to visit. The central atrium was decked out for the holidays and hosted a special exhibit of miniature versions of famous Washington buildings and monuments, all made of natural materials, such as wood, leaves, and nuts. It was a Christmas oasis in the middle of the cold December bustle.
(We did not see any Christmas goats there, much to my disappointment.)
I could continue to describe it for you, but these pictures sum up the splendor and feast for the eyes far more eloquently than words could do.
