Kid Secrets

My sister, her kids, and me, going incognito

Today I went to my sister's house for a visit. (Maintaining my Favorite Aunt status with her four kids requires quite a serious investment of time, after all.) After dinner, we had family night, organized (loosely) by her four-year-old, Jonas.

A key part of family night, as everyone knows, is the treats at the end. I offered to go into the kitchen and find some treats, since Jonas hadn't exactly planned that part out, but because he was in-charge, he wanted to give me a few suggestions first. He stood by the side of my chair and leaned in close, cupping his hands around my ear for privacy.

"We have Skittles and M&Ms and some candy," he whispered in my ear.

Before I could get up from my chair, Jonas's five-year-old brother, Elijah, wanted to get in on the action with some suggestions of his own. "We have some ice cream, and sugar, and brown sugar, and powdered sugar, and maybe even some cookies," he said in a low, excited voice, his head touching mine. His implication was clearly that he would be happy with a big spoonful of sugar, or that I could make them cookies.

Not to be left out, two-year-old Eden promptly ran over to take her turn making suggestions. "I'm a cat," she whispered earnestly. "Meow."

We had Skittles and M&Ms as our treat, even Eden the cat.
