NYE 2012

Happy New Year, fair blog-readers!  With a rough end to 2012 (see previous post re: insufficient water-proof mascara), I am trying hard to place many hopeful eggs in the basket of 2013.

My New Year's Eve included two new experiences:

     1.  I ate a large breakfast shortly after midnight.  Baked French toast casserole, bacon, sausage, hash browns, two kinds of quiche, homemade blueberry muffins, and loads of fresh fruit. What an excellent way to start the new year!

     2.  I rang in 2013 (and ate said sumptuous breakfast) at a party with 10 gay men and no other women.  My friend Dave organized the party at nearly the last minute and, since many of his friends are gay, so were the majority of the guests.  Okay, all of the guests except me.  We played games until shortly before midnight while we snacked on crackers and cheese, pistachios, chocolate, and various beverages.  Everyone was very nice and I'd even met a few of them before at other parties Dave has hosted.

Pros and cons of spending the evening with a group of gay men (when you are a straight woman):

Pros
1.  You don't have to worry about whether your hair and make-up are perfect or dress to impress.  No one is checking you out anyway.
2.  Similarly, there's no pressure to be witty or impress anyone with your knowledge of celebrity baby names or standings of world soccer teams in the hopes that someone will ask for your number.  Flirting won't get you anywhere so no need to bother.
3.  They were all well-dressed and some were pretty buff and cute too.  (Just because they're not checking you out doesn't mean you can't appreciate them.)
4.  This year, it beat yet another NYE of getting Thai food and playing cards with my single girlfriends.

Cons
1.  You're definitely not getting kissed at midnight.
2.  Unless you're frequently the only straight woman in a group of gay men, you might feel slightly out-of-place at times, like realizing you're in an English-speaking country that isn't America.  For instance, I had nothing to contribute when the conversation turned to discussing what happened to that formerly-gay club that's no longer a gay club.

So that was my NYE.  How did you spend yours?

Welcome to 2013.

I have to say that this may be my new favorite post of all times Ms. Marni!!
I loved that you went, that you enjoyed delish food with cool people and that you had a pressure-free NYE - one of the worst holidays ever invented.
Like they say, one door slams shut so that many others can fly open.
May 2013 be filled with rapturous bliss in all ways!
