Prescriptive Prayers

Last night I had dinner at my sister's house and was asked to say the prayer. I prayed for all the people who are still without power in our area, for the emergency workers, first responders, et al. After we all said "Amen," my four-year-old nephew E immediately chided me for not asking a blessing on the people of Haiti. Apparently every family prayer since the earthquake a few weeks ago has included a request to bless the people of Haiti.

This afternoon, my three-year-old nephew J and I got in the car to run an errand, just the two of us. My sister's family prays every time they get in the car to go somewhere. Before my seatbelt was even buckled, J announced, "I'm going to say the prayer this time so you don't forget to bless the people of Haiti." He then pronounced a hurried prayer that was pretty much just a blessing on the people of Haiti.

Amen, little guy.

This story is just another reason why you need to eat those boys...and your niece for dessert!
