The day after our Southern Alps hikes, we went kayaking in Milford Sound. Our lodgings the night before could best be described as basic. We stayed in a backpackers' lodge with a community bathroom/shower room (one for boys, one for girls) and no frills whatsoever. It's about as close to camping as I get. The experience of kayaking in Milford Sound, however, was worth the bare-bones accommodations. Expect a few posts about the kayaking, with different photos. Just FYI. We got to the launch point just after 7am. The sun was barely visible and thick clouds still hung in the sky. Our guide, Gonzo, from Montana, handed out our gear, which included a set of woolly, stripped long underwear for everyone. We put these on over our bathing suits, followed by a fleece on top, then a rubbery kayak skirt, a yellow water-proof jacket, and finally a life jacket. Oh how glamorous we all look in those striped long John's! When we were all suited up, we got our paddles and dry bags, Gonzo gave us a quick kayak lesson, and we loaded up. |
